DLT SMS in India: Pricing, Registration, and Everything You Need to Know

In India, DLT (Distributed Ledger Technology) is a TRAI-mandated system for sending commercial SMS. It ensures that businesses follow rules to prevent spam, protect consumers, and improve SMS delivery reliability.

What Does DLT Mean and Why Is It Important?

DLT is essentially a blockchain-based platform where businesses must register themselves, their sender IDs (SMS headers), and message templates.

Why this matters:

  • Prevent spam and fraud: Only verified entities can send commercial SMS.

  • Traceability: Every message is recorded in the ledger, making it auditable.

  • Template compliance: Only pre-approved messages are allowed, ensuring legitimacy.

  • Better trust and delivery: Recipients know the SMS is from a verified source.

Tip: Always ensure recipients have opted in for promotional SMS to comply with TRAI rules.

DLT Registration

To send commercial SMS in India, every business must register on a DLT (Distributed Ledger Technology) platform approved by telecom operators like Jio, Airtel, Vodafone Idea, BSNL, MTNL, etc.

Here is the complete DLT registration process, explained simply:

DLT registration can be done through any telecom operator. Popular portals include:

  • Jio DLT

  • Vodafone Idea DLT

  • Airtel DLT

  • BSNL DLT

You only need to register with one operator — not all. All operators share data across the DLT network.

You’ll register your company or business as a Principal Entity (PE).

Information required:

  • Business name

  • Registered business address

  • Type of business (sole proprietor / private limited / partnership / NGO / LLP)

  • Contact person details (email & phone number)

Documents required:

  • PAN Card of the business or owner

  • GST Certificate (optional for some, but recommended)

  • Proof of Business Address (electricity bill, rent agreement, etc.)

  • Authorized Signatory ID (Aadhar / PAN / Passport)

  • Letter of Authorization (LOA) if someone else is completing the registration on your behalf

Verification:

  • You will receive an OTP via email and phone

  • After submitting documents, approval usually takes 24–48 hours

Every SMS must show a Sender ID, also known as a Header.

Sender IDs depend on message type:

For Transactional & Service messages:

  • 6-character alphabetic sender ID
    Example:

    • HDFCBK

    • PAYTMP

    • SWIGGY

For Promotional messages:

  • Numeric sender ID generated by the operator
    Example:

    • 877777

    • 568900

The ID must follow TRAI rules and include a suffix:

  • P = Promotional

  • T = Transactional

  • S = Service

  • G = Government

Approval time: 1–2 days

Before sending any SMS, you must register templates under each sender ID.

Template fields include:

  • Template name

  • Template type (Service Implicit / Service Explicit / Promotional)

  • Template content (100% exact final SMS text)

  • Variables ({{name}}, {{otp}}, {{orderId}} etc.)

Examples:

OTP Template:
“Your OTP is {{otp}} for completing your transaction. Please do not share it with anyone.”

Promotional Template:
“Flat {{discount}}% off on all products. Shop now at {{websiteLink}}.”

Important:

  • No random changes allowed after approval

  • No special characters unless registered

  • Variables must be defined clearly

Approval time: 1–3 days depending on operator queue

If you intend to send:

  • Promotional SMS

  • Service Explicit SMS

You must upload recipient consent proof.

Valid forms of consent:

  • Google form responses

  • Website opt-in

  • Signed forms

  • App-based consents

  • CRM records with timestamp

Consent must include:

  • Customer name

  • Phone number

  • Consent date

  • Consent purpose

This step prevents complaints and ensures compliance.

Once DLT approvals are done:

  • Share your Entity ID

  • Share approved Sender IDs

  • Share approved Templates

  • Ensure your gateway supports TRAI’s template matching

  • SMS provider maps everything in their system

This step normally takes a few minutes to a few hours.

After integration, your SMS gateway will automatically:

  • Match templates

  • Validate sender ID

  • Scrub DND numbers

  • Check consent

  • Route messages through operators

Your messages are now DLT-compliant and ready to send.
